Considering surrogacy? Find out the pros and cons of using an agency vs. an independent surrogate. Credit: Fruity Monkey, Flickr

If you are reading this blog post, I assume it is because you have been thinking about surrogacy a lot lately. You are looking forward to the pitter patter of tiny feet in your home but are having trouble becoming pregnant on your own or require the assistance of a surrogate to complete your family. Surrogacy is a great option to bring a biological child into the world by using the womb of a third party – your surrogate. Now is the time to decide whether you would like to try to find a surrogate on your own or to work with a surrogacy agency that will match you with a qualified surrogate and guide you through the entire surrogacy process.

Though I own and run a surrogacy agency, I’ve actually experienced both worlds. I have used an agency and been a “freelance” surrogate on my own, so to speak. There are benefits and drawbacks to both options.

The Benefit of Direct Surrogacy – Saving Money

The primary benefit of cutting out an agency and searching directly for a surrogate is that you can save money. We’re not talking about pennies here either. A surrogacy agency can charge anywhere from $15,000 to $25,000 for their fee. Keep in mind that you will already be expected to pay anywhere from $25,000 to $40,000 to the surrogate herself when all is said and done, and this doesn’t include the cost of IVF treatment, attorney fees, and health insurance premiums!

Yikes, this is a lot of money, and many future parents may simply not be able to hand over an additional $20,000 to a surrogacy agency. This is completely understandable, but parents who do have the funds for an agency will appreciate all the extra benefits they get.

A Surrogacy Agency Handles All the Details

A surrogacy agency will help you at every step in the surrogacy process. One of the most important things that a surrogacy agency does is match you with the right surrogate. Agencies spend a lot of time and effort recruiting high quality surrogates. At Circle of Life Surrogacy, all of our surrogates have to meet strict standards to ensure that they are healthy and financially stable enough to serve as top notch surrogates and have no mental health issues or past criminal records. We also care very deeply about matching surrogates and future parents who are also a good personality fit and agree on important issues such as reductions and termination.

In addition to this important service, surrogacy agencies serve as a conduit between the future parents and their surrogates. We provide future parents with regular updates on the surrogate’s progress and even attend appointments with the surrogate on behalf of the parents if they are unable to make it (such as in the case of international parents). We also assist with:

  • Referrals to attorneys to draw up the surrogacy contract
  • Referrals to fertility clinics
  • Helping the surrogate schedule her appointments
  • Providing the surrogate with voluntary counseling, nutritional coaching, and relaxation therapies during pregnancy
  • Assisting with birth certificates and passports once the baby is born
  • Managing disbursement of payments to surrogates and third parties

Parents who choose not to use an agency will have to manage all of these responsibilities on their own. They must also deal with all negotiations and handle any miscommunications and disagreements that arise, which can be frustrating and stressful.

Again, there is no right or wrong answer here. Some parents may believe shouldering more responsibilities is worth it in order to save a big chunk of money. I can tell you that Circle of Life Surrogacy is one of the most competitively priced agencies in the United States and we cater to each and every need of our surrogates and future parents.
